To help you understand bitrates and how the quality of file effects the size of your download we've produce this guide to bitrates, the files we support and the formats we use.
We support three different bitrates on our full track mp3 downloads, 192, 256 and 320 kbps; these are highlighted on the pages of the mp3 downloads. Each download will tell you the bitrate of the file you can download.
These are broadcast quality downloads suitable for audiophiles! Before I started this website I used to work on the radio, every time we loaded a song on the playout computer we encoded it at 320 kbps to ensure it was the highest quality.
Mp3s encoded at 320 kbps are going to sound great if you're playing them on the cheapest mp3 player or the most expensive Bang & Olufsen sound system.
When you're ripping tracks from a CD at home select 320 kbps for the best quality.
Downloads encoded at 256 kbps are going to sound better than those encoded at 192 but not as good as those files encoded at 320 kbps.
Mp3s encoded at 256 kbps are going to sound nearly as good as CD.
Mp3 files encoded at 192 kbps aren't going to sound as great as those at 320 or 256 kbps but will still sound great on your computer or mp3 player. These files aren't going to sound as good as a CD as the quality is degraded but only the most finely tuned ears will notice the subtle differences.
Most downloads from iTunes are encoded at 192 kbps, most of our downloads are encoded at 320 kbps. Not wishing to belittle our competition but 9 out of 10 times ours simply sound better!
Bitrates are measured in KBPS, that's kilobytes per second or how much computer storage sound and video files take up per second.
A file encoded at 192 kbps will use 192 kilobytes of space per second, one encoded at 320 kbps will use 320 kb of space per second of music.
The higher the bitrate the better the quality of the audio in the file! The higher the bitrate the larger the file will be, it makes sense as a higher bitrate is fitting in more sound (data) per second than lower bitrates.
